Samson And His Jawbone

Judges 15:14-17 -And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands. And he found a new jawbone of a donkey, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith. And Samson said, With the jawbone of a donkey, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of a donkey have I slain a thousand men. And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand, and called that place Ra'math-le'hi.

Samson had married a woman of the Philistines, Tim'nath. When he went to claim her, her father had had given her to someone else.

At that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel and the Lord was looking for an occasion against them.

How many of you know That your enemy is God's enemy?

From what I've read about Samson, he looks like an occasion looking for a place to happen!

Well, when he found out that his wife had been given to his best friend, he just went berserk! He could NOT contain himself!

How many of you know that a man kinda wants to keep his wife private?

Remember, God was already looking to get something going with the Philistines! When God's gonna get somebody, He's gonna get them!

So Samson caught three hundred foxes. How many of you know that foxes don't want to be caught?

And Samson set fire to their tails. Now, how many of you know that foxes don't want their tails set on fire?

And he turned them loose in the Philistine's corn field. Now here are these foxes running everywhere! Probably looking for a river to set down in!

But they ran through the corn and set it on fire: both the shock AND the standing corn. Then they set on fire their vineyards and their olives!

Now, when you burn a man's corn AND his vineyards AND his olives, you don't leave him much! I can tell you right now that the Philistines didn't want that to happen!

Now keep on remembering that God is setting up an international incident. His people are being dominated by these uncircumcised Philistines! God just won't have that!

He won't!

There is something about a Philistine that makes him mad when someone burns his corn and his vineyards and his olives. It's just the way a Philistine is!

So they went looking for Samson and caught him, and brought him to Le'hi. And we come to where we started reading . . . .

And this is the strange thing . . . Samson reached out and took this jawbone of the donkey. And killed a thousand men with it. AND THEN HE THREW IT AWAY!

Now, I'm as confused as a termite in a Y0-YO! How many of you know a termite would be confused in a YO-YO?

I know if I had a weapon like that, I sure wouldn't throw it away!

I'd find out how it was made. I'd take it to someone and get a BUNCH of them made! I'd put it on the market as the greatest thing to come along since the sling!

But how many of you know that God doesn't work the same way every time? What works in one situation might not work in another!

Only God knows! And because He knows, we can depend on him to provide what we need at the right time!

So, as we go into this new year let's look to God for a NEW BEGINNING! Let's look forward to going places with this Church that we haven't been before!

Let's get rid of the old donkey bones! Let's not get any more honey out of dead animals and let's DON'T BE MARRYING ANY PHILISTINE WOMEN!!

Let's UN-TIE ourselves from the world and move on toward the future!

Let's lay aside all those weights we put on last year. The methods of last year might not work for this year!

Some of them didn't even work LAST YEAR!

This was a NEW BEGINNING for Samson. He didn't have another incident for THIRTY YEARS! And then he only had to move a gate for somebody!

So we need to stick as close together as the Israelites did! We are all of ONE family! We are all of ONE blood and we all HAVE ONE SAVIOR AND HIS NAME IS JESUS!
