God provides His own King
1 Samuel 16:1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou
mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with
oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king
among his sons.
We may want to provide our own king, our own plan of salvation, our own solution to our problems, our needs. But God has provided the King of kings for us! He has rejected our choices. We can not save ourselves with man-made plans and schemes.
1 Samuel 16:2-3 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD. And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
Some of us are afraid of what our friends or family may say or do if we decide to give up to God and begin to be a full-time christian. Old friends may desert us: brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers may not want to be around us, but God says to grab a heifer and come on to the celebration! Friends and family can't save our souls. They can't heal our bodies! They can't give that divine comfort that Jesus can!
And, if you make that decision to do it God's way, He will always "show you what you should do!" If you are a leader, He will show you whom to lead! If you are a follower, He will show you whom to follow!
1 Samuel 16:4-5 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
To the elders he said, "sanctify yourselves", but Jesse, the one God had sent him to, he himself sanctified (set apart). He invited them ALL to the sacrifice, but he gave special attention to Jesse and Jesse's sons. He didn't know the EXACT one God was looking for, but he knew it was one of Jesse's sons!
We may not always know what God has in store for us, but we will ALWAYS know He has exactly what we need! Jehovah Jirah will ALWAYS be our Provider!
v.6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him.
Samuel's choice was the "good-looking" one!
v.7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
Did you ever think God had made a mistake? "God, you just don't understand."
1 Samuel 16:8-10 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.
Jesse had brought all his sons he thought fit for the job before God and God rejected them one by one. The father thought, how can God pass up these fine specimens? Samuel couldn't figure it out: God had said the new king would come from Jesse's sons, but He had rejected them all!
v.11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
"Well, I've got one more, but he's much too young. Much too ignorant. Why, he's only good for tending sheep. I've got him watching the flock while his brothers are here for you to look at. I know they are MUCH better equipped." But God already has it all planned!
v.12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
v.13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward.
David made many mistakes as he walked with God, but because of his contrite spirit and his anointing, God's Spirit was with him "from that day forward."
When we do it God's way, His Spirit will bless and empower His choice!
